God Save The Vamp Queen - Evan Rachel Wood's Anemic Performance in HBO True Blood

I was not impressed with Evan Rachel Wood portrayal of The Queen and underwhelmed at her character's unveiling on HBO's True Blood. Admittedly, I'm not a fan of hers, but I was hoping she would at least bring some bite to the role. She looked stunning as a vampire, but Wood's performance seemed bland and superficial.

Fans of hers will say that she was playing coy. I love a character that plays coy to his/her advantage. But Wood's performance lacked scene-stealing power. When the queen mentioned Eisenhower, I didn't get the feeling that she was ever in that era. I don't think the actress has said the word Eisenhower prior to this role.

Lorena was a vamp, whom I didn't necessarily like, but commanded a certain presence.  Jason has some ridiculous lines but pulls them off.  I'm hoping Evan Rachel Wood will bring a bit more seductive provocation in future episodes. She dumped Billy Elliott, stole Marilyn Manson from Dita and then had sex with him in his music video. GROSS!! So she should be able to deliver the drama!

  1. I definitely agree with you. I wasn't impressed by Wood's performance either. Quite disappointing, since there was so much hype about her coming to the show.

  2. I also agree. Her scenes actually brought down the whole episode for me and that's saying a LOT. ERW's performance came off more reality show reject than centuries old vampire queen. True Blood deserves so much better!

  3. Thank goodness...I was beginning to think I was the only one who thought ERW's performance was a complete disappointment. I was unfamiliar with her before this, but after all the hoopla about her being chosen as the one to play Queen Sophie, I expected much, much more. She had about as much screen presence as a boiled potato.

And sorry...but lady vamps should have flawless skin. Judging from the blemishes showing under the five pounds of makeup below her mouth, this was a "breakout" performance for her.

  4. she needed to be more mysterious and bad ass. the queen is supposed to be intimidating not trying to be funny. she should have tooken some pointers from Pam's character.

  5. I am still wondering why she didn't have an accent. I mean, how old is she and where is she from?
